Typing "linux single" should load your kernel without the sound module.
Once you've booted, remove everything sound-related from /etc/modules.conf
and you shouldn't have any more problems. You could also run sndconfig
and setup the new card.

You should also be able to re-install lilo by typing "lilo" as root.
