Yes, you can.

$ tune2fs -j /dev/hdaX
        (creates journal)
        # tune2fs -c 0 -i 0 /dev/hdaX
        (turnes auto-fsck'n off)

then modify the extry in your /etc/fstab from ext2 to ext3.  Run lilo if
you've journaled the root filesystem and reboot...
