I use a cable modem for my internet service. It's relatively problem free. 
Your mileage may vary, depending on your cable provider's configuration 
and protocol selection. But, if they use standard DHCP, all you really 
need to do is enable DHCP on the Ethernet interface connected to your 
cable modem.

Otherwise, you will need to know what protocols they're using for 
authentication and address assignment, and do some reading up on TCP/IP 
configuration on The Linmux Documentation Project.
