Should, yes.

I've had a system or two, though, where it didn't.

What I did, instead, was create a symlink in my homedir that pointed to 
/dev/null...call it "trashcan"

I then used $HOME/trashcan, instead of /dev/null, and for whatever reason, 
it worked.
