Um, "like this" being key, I tried this:

  [root@borg rpm]# rpm -Uvh `cat 2002-05-16`

...and it seems to have worked.  Thanks!

So my install didn't work because some of the packages were already
there and *they* didn't get new versions.  Update, however, was
willing to install brand new stuff for some RPMs and updated stuff for
previously existing stuff.  Right?
