I have a Dell inspirion 7000 laptop with a Xircom multifunction card XE5600.  I allowed the OS to autodetect during install and the card apparently was not recognized.  I've tried to manually configure it but no Xircom cards are listed.  Can anyone point me in the right direction.  Xircom is no help as they live in the Windows world exclusively.

I had a similar issue: A "new" IBM Thinkpad 300 (PII, 266, circa 1998 purchased on eBay). I needed a network card to connect to my office LAN, via Ethernet. Looked high and low for a PCMCIA (Type 1, Type 2, etc.) card and ended up with a Xircom "10/100 Network Card." I couldn't find a driver for it to save my life, though.   ...

BTW cardctl ident lists the card correctly
If i understand, this merely means the PCMCIA adapter is loaded correctly NOT the Card itself.  (Just reading ident from card PROM).

My card didn't seem to be recognized at first. PCMCIA looked good, but no connection. I checked the internal files and discovered that the card HAD been recognized and assigned a driver! Seems like some of the drivers are pre-loaded on the system. (Yeah!) Still not network connection, though.
My failing was not rebooting the system. Forgot about DHCP needing a reboot to accept the new data. That's what worked for me.

Check the file (cardctl indent), again. Look to see if a driver is listed for that card, then reboot. Worked for me, anyway. YMMV
