I'm willing to bet that it's "Received message too long". There are a few
things that can cause this:
    - shell is unusual
    - protocol mismatch
    - .profile putting out messages before signon is complete (this should
only be done on interactive logons).

Go to
http://www.google.com/search?q=sftp+received+message+too+long&num=30&hl=en&n
ewwindow=1&sa=n&oq=sftp+received+message+too+lnog

The message wrapped, but go to google and enter "sftp received message too
long" and you'll see a few suggestions on things to try.
