hmm... have compiled my own kernels in the past (few years ago) but have not felt the 
need since - sure it would bea reasonably steep learning curve for me again! :)

I'm not too sure how recompiling the kernel myself would affect future rpm kernel 
updates - but I guess you're suggesting no more rpm updates? being a part-time 
sysadmin with lots (for me anyway) of machines under my administratorship I find 
installing everything via rpm - and using RHN network to keep clients up to date makes 
a lot of sense...

I guess I would go down this path some time soon if I can't get it working without... 
but I really believe this should be a simple setup issue.

anyway - will wait to see if anyone else has suggestions, thanks for your help & input 
to date!
