        1) April Fools day is NOT just limited to North America and is
very popular in Europe, where it originated.

        2) Linus is a RENOUNED practical joker. Several years ago, his
annual "I'm done with Linux" message was launched within seconds after
midnight GMT and hit North America well before 00:00 April 1. Like almost
5 hours before April 1 on the East Coast. Some of his April fools day
jokes have been so creative as to earn him threats of bodily harm. Funny,
it doesn't seem to have slowed him up a bit.

        3) It has become a tradition. It would almost be a disappointment
if we didn't have such an announcement from Linus on that most hallowed /
hollowed / harried of days... :-)

        4) One of these years we won't have an announcement from Linus
that he's giving up on Linux, or signing up with Microsoft, or becoming
a hermit, or something. When that day comes everyone will wonder, at
the end of the day, what happened. Something will have been missing,
even if we can't put our finger on it.
