Why did you compile a new kernel? The kernel that Red Hat supplies already has PPP support. How did you generate your config file for the new kernel? Did you start with the one Red Hat supplies with the sources? Did you perhaps go to a Linux kernel site and grab a kernel? If so, you're not using a Red Hat kernel (which is heavily modified from the "official" version).
