I agree that it is a routing problem somewhere, but have yet to find it. We get timeout errors all the time. We have swapped out the RTL8139c and tried a Netgear and then an Intel Ethernet Express 100. I still can't figure out where the problem is with routing. We have another rackmount server that is using the exact same motherboard configuration and we did a fress install of RedHat 7.2 on it, and it's routing just fine. So, my guess is that there's something wrong with the motherboard, or there is indeed a routing issue that we overlooked.
