In general, the Matrox cards come highly recommended (although I've never owned one). I've had an old NVidia based card (TNT2 era) that worked fine under RedHat 7.2, but you only got 3D accelearation if you used NVidia's closed source drivers. That's why I switched to the ATI card once XFree86 4.2 came out.
