Emmanuel, thanks for your response
I actually didnt get hit too hard, the ftp command
quit well before copying all of /etc on byers to /etc on corni,
probably bc of some permissions thing, not sure.
In any case I am extremely lucky.
corni is still up, functioning

It did overwrite XF86Config which might not be a prob, might work wochange
I havent tested restarting X yet,
looking for my corni monitor specs

It also got /etc/hosts* these I have corrected

It got fstab I corrected this, havent tested reboot yet

locate was broken bc /etc/group was overwritten
i found an old copy now locate works again

it got inetd.conf I corrected this.

maybe a few others also corrected.

The remaining stuff looks like i dont use much or at all,
but would like
to correct them if it is clear how to proceed in a way that
doesnt cause me more problems than i already have.

I am not sure exactly how rpm works with that '--replacefiles'
  from the man page
       --replacefiles
Install the packages even if they replace files
              from other, already installed, packages.

not clear as to implications:
--is it necessary to use this --replacefiles option
--will upgrade of a pkg fail wo it?
--or will it upgrade the basic pkg wo overwriting my faulty files?

My main question re doing rpm upgrade on various pkgs is:
will it, especially with the --replacepkgs :
  modify many other config files
that I havent overwritten and dont want modified?

I have done some rpm upgrading in the past, but far from an expert

for what it is worth here is the list of files and rpm -qf response
Any comments welcome
