I didn't get the beginning of the thread, but are you sure you are not trying
to do POP?  In other words, are you trying to download email from this system?
If so, you also need to install the imap RPM, at least in older versions of
Red Hat such as 6.2.  Sendmail is a MTA and it can _not_ be configured to
POP email.
