1) Are you local when trying to get rid of X?
2) How do you manage to get out of X to begin with to have this problem?
3) If you're in runlevel 3, then just flip to the tty that X is running on 
(default redhat setup would be to hit alt+f7 I think.. X runs on the tty 
right after the last one defined in inittab). From there exit normally.. 
or try ctrl+alt+backspace.
