i reinstalled 7.2 again, this time choosing "classic x windows" only. now
the font problem is gone, i.e. both AA and no AA fonts work great.

this whole situation still bothers me though because on every other machine i
have installed 7.2 on (including the problematic machine in the past), i
chose "x windows" rather than "classic x windows" and everything works great.

whats even more weird is that when i go to "preferences->look and
feel->info->xserver", it says i'm running version 4.1.0, despite the fact i
chose to install "classic x windows" this time.

my conclustion? a piece of dust got on a transistor in my processor and thus
linux/xfree86/kde ceased to work. then later this evening the piece of dust
fell off, so now everything works.

anyways, thats my story and resolution, i hope no one else has to deal with
this kinda stuff...
