Enigma machine running kernel-2.4.9-7, I tried to shutdown to reboot a kernel update. After issuing 'reboot', the machine began shutting down, and appeared to hang at 'INIT: No more services at this run level.' So, I hit 'enter' and was presented with a command prompt. Odd, thought I, so I issued 'halt' and got: "System halted"... and a command prompt. So, for lack of anything else, I entered 'reboot', which immediately reset the system, without unmounting the disks. Very strange behavior, I thought, and rebooted the new kernel to have a look at the logs. I also chose to force an fsck on all partitions. One bad inode found and repaired. - - From the log: Nov 7 21:01:17 enigma PAM-securetty[975]: Couldn't open /etc/securetty Nov 7 21:01:22 enigma login(pam_unix)[975]: session opened for user root by LOGIN(uid=0) Nov 7 21:01:22 enigma -- root[975]: ROOT LOGIN ON tty1 Ok, so what's happening with /etc/securetty ? [root@enigma root]# rpm -qf /etc/securetty setup-2.5.7-1 [root@enigma root]# rpm -V setup S.5....T c /etc/printcap [root@enigma root]# ls /etc/securetty ls: /etc/securetty: No such file or directory So, the file that doesn't exist, belongs to the setup rpm, which seems to think that all of it's files are in good order. Anyone have any ideas as to why it failed to shutdown, or why rpm seems to think a missing file isn't a problem? Or for that matter, why /etc/securetty has gone missing? I copied /etc/securetty from another Enigma box, and ran rpm -V again. [root@enigma etc]# rpm -V setup S.5....T c /etc/printcap .......T c /etc/securetty [root@enigma etc]# mv securetty securetty.save [root@enigma etc]# rpm -V setup S.5....T c /etc/printcap Thanks in advance.
