fat32 isn't notoriously efficient, but I'd be surprised if that was
the problem. I will say, though, that I've not had much luck with
xmms. It seems to have quite a bit of trouble with a lot of things.
I prefer to use Freeamp, Realplayer, or even the trusty command-line
mpg123, which works very well.
