Another thought on this: if you have a root window open to this system
somewhere at the time of the failure, you can sometimes sneak out of
this safely by doing 'exec reboot'.  That may work cleanly even if you
can't fork a process ... it saved me a big fsck once.  Type carefully,
because you only get one chance at this.  =)

Though they may or may not be directly responsible in this case, you
might also consider moving away from sendmail and BIND to something
more efficient.  qmail and djbdns do a lot more work with far less
overhead.
