I have a Yamaha 16/10/40 IDE CDRW, and while I haven't
gotten to use it under Linux yet, I also haven't had much
luck w/ it under Win98 either. I have it installed in a
Dell OptiPlex GX1 P3-500 w/ 384MB RAM, a 10GB IDE HD, a 52X
IDE CDROM drive, and an IDE ZIP-100 drive. The problem is,
when the CDRW spins up, it a) sounds like a jet engine
coming up to speed, and b) it sucks so much CPU, or
something, that the whole system literally grinds to a halt
until it gets done. Even just on simple stuff like feeding
an application CD into the drive, it does this. I don't
know if the fault is w/ the drive or my system
configuration, but it is damn annoying!!

What an unsuspecting mechanic hears as he learns to never, ever, play 'Catch' with a
bored electrician ;)
