My understanding is that vmware tries to require you to do something
you shouldn't do.
One of the kernel traffic summaries said that consensus on
linux-kernel is that you should not put source for the running kernel
in /usr/src/linux. (!) It should go somewhere else.
It is more important, according to this reasoning, to have your kernel
headers match your C library, so that when you compile programs,
strange things don't happen (as much :).
But vmware appears to insist that you put headers for the running
kernel there.
What you can do, without running afoul of net.wisdom (Linus', not
Becker's, BTW), is to temporarily put source for the running kernel in
/usr/src/linux, install vmware, then put back the source for the
kernel that matches your C library.
This should no longer be necessary once the new convention for where
to put the source for the running kernel is adopted. I'm hoping
future redhat kernel RPM's will honor the new convention.
