Hi all, last night I downloaded the new 7.1 iso's from
two sources (*buffalo.edu and *wisc.edu). I'm was running a completely
up2date version of 7.0 w/ more or less stock parts (recompiled kernel for
atapi cd-burner :: this is a dell 5000e (w/ the fixed bios): sony atapi cd
r/w ati 128 mobile vid.) One thing I noticed is that *none* of the iso's
fix properly. On fixing I got the following error : "input/output error no
seek complete". I had bad burns on both main discs powertools and docs
(I'm an idiot and didn't notice the error messages until i had gone thru
four:)). I've never had error messages on burning cd's let alone this
consistantly so I first tried burning a directory to make sure everything
was up and up and then tried mounting the images via loop. The iso's
mount properly, so I mounted them and remade the 2 main iso images w/ the
first one being bootable. I burned these images w/out any problems.

I did the "upgrade" path added a slew of packages that I thought
would be fun and let it do its thing. One thing later I had a 7.1 laptop
:). (4.0.3 is orders of magnitude better 4.0.2 for my vid card which
is why I did the upgrade, kde 2.1.1 is vaguely better than 1.* version ::
i think it sucks they got rid of the "exclude from session management"
option for windows)

Now my main issue thusfar is that my pcmcia stuff doesn't work at
all anymore which means i'm off the net :( (Apparantly it was a bit flakey
w/ the beta's). I've looked in the obvious places (/etc/sysconfig/pcmcia).
The weird thing is, is that if i restart pcmcia (i.e. in init.d) the
cardmgr detects cards so there may be some weird ordering issue w/
my init.d however even when restarting pcmcia it seems to not actually do
anything more than detect the card as being in or not in. (I have a
aironet wireless and a xircom cardbus to play w/. )

At that point it was 3.00am so I thought today I would try
downgrading my kernel back to 2.2.17-14 since i'm vaguely guessing this
is a weird kernel issue (or optimistically a there are wrong things in my
init.d issue) and I know that it works or at least used to :) but thought
i'd ask you guys to see if there is anything obvious that i'm missing w/
regards to getting pcmcia working again and/or if anyone is having similar
problems w/ laptops..
