It sounds like you've had a bad experience. Rather than complaining and
blaming RedHat, I'd suggest you stand up, take a little responsibility for
your open source software, and ask for help, or at least contribute a bug
report.
I have to say I've been very happy with 7.0. 7.0 was supposed to be a
little difficult because it is a stepping stone to the 2.4 kernel. In
reality, I have had almost no problems with 7.0 on the 250+ servers,
workstations, and laptops on which I've installed or upgraded.
It is a tricky one, no doubt, but nowhere as tricky as the 4.2 -> 5.0
(which required a complete re-install if I remember correctly), or the 5.2
-> 6.0.
Of the thousands of applications I've supported on RH, I know of only one
that doesn't run as well or better on 7.0 than on 6.2. That application is
Oracle server. From what I can tell, Oracle uses internal or
undocumented glibc methods, which is asking for trouble, and harldy
RedHat's fault.
If you need help ask. There are plenty of people using it successfully who
would be happy to lend a hand or give advice. If you bought it from RH you
get to call them with installation and upgrade questions. Personally,
I've never had much trouble with RH's distributions, so I don't bother
paying for it. I have a hard time understanding how anyone could be so
bitter against something that is for all purposes freely available.
