i think you want /etc/sysconfig/network.  there might be others, but i know this one 
contains a gateway parameter.  hrm . . . the one on my system points to 192.168.1.254, 
which is an invalid IP address for my network.  What's up with that?  I'm gatewaying 
just fine through 10.0.0.1 . . .  Is this file only used in conjunction with linuxconf?

yes.  you'll use the nameserver parameter, like this:

nameserver 207.184.63.66
