A quote I've always liked is, "Unix not only doesn't prevent you from
shooting yourself in the foot; it asks you what caliber you'd like
to use."  Or something close to that.  And Linux fits the bill, here, too.

I'm not saying David's view is shooting himself in the foot; rather, being
an admin means, among other things, understanding and using different
schemes and approaches depending on the system environment.  In David's
case, for whatever reason, he'd prefer not to use labels.  Presumably, one
of the support steps he takes is to keep that ever-important notebook with
system configuration information (disaster recovery aid, don't y'know).

The flip side of the coin trusts that the labels will help; again,
I expect there's a notebook enumerating the label assignments anyway,
but with that done, to label or not to label is another choice.
