Up2date normaly does not upgrade the kernel. This is turned off in the
config file because updating the kernel is not completely automated.
You normaly have to edit /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo after installing an
updated kernel. also, when updating a kernel RPM, you normaly want to
use rpm -i, and not rpm -U.
Up2date does a nice job of keeping user space programs up to date.

Up2date automates this part for you, as far as the RPMs released by
RedHat. For other software, how you keep up to date varies. Some
software has an anounce list that lets you know of bug fixes, and
updates. For others, the security mailing lists will let you know of
bugs, and bug fixes. (Just like with any other flavor of UNIX.)
For software included with RedHat, you can normaly find the latest
official packages at update.redhat.com. They are devided up by realese.
You should not jump major realese numbers when getting RPMs. Minor
numbers are compatable, but major numbers are usualy not. If you have
to have a package from another major tree, you are better off grabing
the source RPM and compiling it your self.
