up2date is fully capable of upgrading any rpm installed software.

Sometimes. Sometimes I roll my own rpms and install those. Other times I
just download, untar and make install.

I generally ...
o Read the vendor supplied security bulletins and apply all recommended
updates.
o Keep up to date on vulnerabilities listed on BugTraq and other places,
and install critical updates when the vendor hasn't supplied one in a
timely manner.
o Check RPM signatures for any rpms I don't build myself before
installing. Download source from the same supplier and review the code and
patches as time permits.
o Try to know my systems, keep up to date on any mailing lists for the
software I've installed, and watch out for unusual behavior.
Seems obvious, but it works.
