Since I didn't see any reply to your email, let me reply with a couple of
hints.  First of all, the PAM libraries allow you to control authentication
via modules that will provide a common API for all applications.  That way,
applications don't need to be written to read the information from the
/etc/passwd or /etc/shadow files... I believe.  I'm no expert in these issues.
