Try running "/sbin/lsmod" and seeing if the sg module is loaded.
Also check /var/log/dmesg and see if you SCSI adapter is being found,
and if the CD writter is showing up on it.  You can also take a look in
/proc/scsi/scsi and see what devices the kernel know about.
