You don;t need a kdm login to get a KDE desktop. On the kdm/gdm login screen
there is an option to select the desktop you want. In gdm it's the "Session"
menu. I have  forgotten what the equivalent kdm menu is called, but it
should be easy to find.

GDM will offer to make your desktop choice permanent. KDM uses whatever you
used during your last login.
