I also have a question related to this. I thought one of the main
features added in the 2.4 kernel is precisely raw I/O. Is it also supported
in the 2.2 kernel? If so, is it reliable enough? That could be the
problem affecting Kapil. I'm just asking this because I recently dealt
with a customer (I provide tech support for a company that I will not
name here) with similar problems and he was also running the 2.2 kernel
(on Red Hat Linux 6.2 in that case). As soon as I had him compile the new
2.4 kernel everything seemed to work fine.
