        do you have a multi-port serial card attached to this machine ?
        (or other such device which requires gettys ?)

        try  typing (quickly)

                init=/bin/bash

        when the lilo prompt appears

        and try to find what is happening in line 108 of /etc/rc.d/rc
        (possibly hashing it out - depding upon what is thereJ)

        note : you shoud have /bin/vi available (or /bin/ed) which
        will have to be called by path

        if you make changes remember to sync the disks

        someting like  /bin/sync; sleep 2; /bin/sync; sleep 1

        should be fine - and try a reboot into single again
