Absolutely. Likewise. I had the same reaction. Solaris tar is not
only feature poor, it's also brain damaged. (Try creating an archive
using absolute paths and then restoring using relative paths. If you
figure out how, drop me a line. But careful you don't hose a machine
while trying.)
But just try convincing Sun "[We] will never embrace Linux" Microsystems
of any idea that didn't come out of their own house or exist in the Unix
community prior to about 1992. The difference is that the GNU tar
maintainer can just say, okay, there's name space overlap here, one of
us has to give and Sun sure won't, so it might as well be us.
