In the event you do not compile support for ide directly into your
kernel. You must use an initrd. You can't access your disk with ide
disk support. If you can't access your disk you can't load the module
with out an initrd. There fore is something wrong /w the initrd or the
modules in it. Did you update modutils, and mkinitrd?
I never use initrd unless I'm creating a boot floppy. It's just
another place to go wrong. I refuse to debug an initrd issue unless
there is a sane reason to use one. Compile in the ide-disk support.
You are going to have to load it any way.
This indicates you can't load the ide-disk module:
request_module[ide-disk]: root fs not mounted
hda: driver not present
