ok, literally 2 seconds after i wrote this huge stupid message, i did a "make 
menuconfig" in the kernel source and found an option called "kernel module 
loader".  when i get info about this option, it says "turn this on if you 
want the kernel to load appropriate modules at boot time".  so, i'm going to 
turn this on, recompile and hope things work...=)
