I'm afraid I don't have any scientific solution for you, but I'd like to
add a couple of things.
First, you didn't need to copy the .netscape directory from root and
change ownership to all those files. Simply renaming that directory to
something else and then launching Netscape wil recreate it.
Now, for the semi-scientific solution. If you truly want to know which
file was causing the problem, start shuffling files back and forth from
that directory until you find the culprit. Chances are it will be one
of these: plugin-list, registry, preferences.js or anything from the
cache directory. Actually, I believe I read somehwhere that the
plugin-list file is the one causing this exact error message.
Another idea: run 'strace netscape' and take a look at the output. You
can redirect the output to a file and then analyze it to see at what
point the program is failing.
