******I sent this 2 days ago thought I would give it another chance as
someone must be using one of these and have it properly configured*******
Hello All:
Anyone running a Courier V.everything 56k modem? I was running a V.90 USR
sportster external but got my hands on a new Courier and I can not seem to
get the connect speeds that the sportster could obtain. I am running RH 6.2
dialup and use the ppp-on/ppp-off script to dial out. I always used to
maintain a 36000 to 38000 connect speed with the sportster and it always
negotiated a V.90 connection. The courier will negotiate a V.90 connection 1
out of 5 tries at a speed of 32000 max. Most of the time it falls back to a
28,800 connection as if the v.90 could not be negotiated. Kudzu identified
my modem properly so I assumed the proper driver was installed. I am
wondering if an init string would help it achieve the connect speed it is
capable of. I live in a rural area and I think I have some line problems
which caused my poor 56k connections to fall back to 38000. What baffles me
is that my sportster is consistent with its connect speed and the Courier is
not. Anyone running one of these that could give me some tips on what init
string or options I could try to get a better connect speed. I have tryed
using kppp but it achieves the same result. I don't usually run in X mode so
I'd rather make the changes to my script but will switch to an X dialer if
it can get the speed I want. I use this machine only for dialup and packet
forwarding via IP masquade for 4 other RH 6.2 machines/windoze machines so I
don't really need to run the box in X. I run the courier with the standard
dip switches 3,5, & 8 down or on just like my sportster. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. I am connected to a V.90 supported ISP so I know there
is no problem there.
Thanks in Advance,
Eddie Strohmier
