Hi - not sure if this one got out as I only just resubscribed after a
brief spell away and I haven't seen it turn up on the list to date...
anyway - I've added a bit of info the the lpq results:
I have had LPR working happily on a server but haven't used it for a
year or so. I just tried to setup a printer for sharing with samba
and couldn't get it to work. During my debugging I decided to check
if the printer was indeed still working. So i did:
lptest | lpr
a few times... and... well - lpq showed that there were jobs in the
queue - although the list looks a bit strange:
[root@magma lp]# lpq
server.domain.com: sending to printer.domain.com
Rank Owner Job Files Total Size
1st dan 13 (standard input) 16000 bytes
2nd dan 14 (standard input) 16000 bytes
3rd dan 15 (standard input) 16000 bytes
4th dan 16 (standard input) 16000 bytes
0 bytes
no entries
why does it end with 0 bytes... and why does it claim there are no entries?
the print queue seems to chug along ok - jobs are removed
progressively... but nothing ever turns up at the printer... for the
life of me I can't get the printer to print anything now... I *can*
print to the printer via LPR using my macintosh - so I'm pretty sure
that the problem is in my linux setup.
my /etc/printcap looks like this:
lp:\
:sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp:\
:mx#0:\
:sh:\
:rm=printer.domain.com:\
:rp=/:\
:if=/var/spool/lpd/lp/filter:
and the filter is the "smart print filter" installed by... uhm... I
dunno - but it's part of the standard RH 6.2 distro...
I've checked my permissions and everything seems normal... according
to the printing HOWTO and other stuff I've been reading on the net...
does anyone have any ideas as to where I might be going wrong / what
I should check. everything looks right to me... except for the lpq
output that is!
oh yeah - I've only got shell access to this machine now - no X
windows gui niceties for me! so can't use printtool... but come to
think of it a recent test when I had the monitor etc on with
printtool "print test page" *did* print the nice redhat test page...
but I could be lying here...
Thanks in advance, Dan.
