Older kernels wouldn't allow more than 128MB in a single partition (or was
it total?). 2.2+ kernels will let you do more than 128MB. I have a 256MB
swap partition.. 128MB RAM. Traditionally, swap should be double (or
at least equal to) your RAM.. then as RAM amounts in systems grew and
grew.. that sort of got out of hand. The swap size should be the amount of
swap that you'll need. If you have 512MB RAM and you aren't running a
server, the need for swap is prolly non-existant. I rarely touch my swap
partition... but I'm not running a server. The only time I do use any swap
is when I'm running Netscape (plus a few other things).. NS is such a
memory hog and it uses the CPU as a bean-bag chair.
Swap is good to have around just in case. There is no way of knowing how
much you'll need unless you have a lot of experience in the matter. It's
all in how much RAM you have and what you run.
