Well, I just returned a Netgear RT-314 DSL Router after using it for a
month.

The following are my impressions, but I don't vouch that it's totaly
accurate to the RT-314 operation due to my limited experience with such
devices.

You can administer it via serial port or via its own web interface. The
manual states that you only have complete control via the serial
interface, though I couldn't find a difference.

By my count, it had space for 72 rulesets, though the interface in this
regard was clunky. It took more than one screen to generate each ruleset.
A table would have been much better. You could've seen all the parameters
in one shot, and copied and pasted rule parameters easily.

There was no macro/scripting language to send rule changes to the unit.
Personally, I like to open and close ports on my firewall as needed, and
without some sort of scripting it's too damn inconvenient.

Out of the box the unit is setup with rules to handle telnet, ftp, and
http. Probably not a totally bad unit for a family or small office with
limited firewall needs.

Also, I happened to see that SMC has a similiar unit that includes a
printer port for a network printer.

Good luck.

BTW, I ended up building a linux box to handle my firewall needs.
