I've tried the 'trick' below and it worked fine on a RH6.2+ system.

Problem was that when doing a shutdown I had to manually visit both vt08
and vt09 before the shutdown proceeded. Since this PC is regularly
shutdown by people that are not interested in understanding these kind
of behaviors, I had to take it out.
