I heard of this being done before, but don't recall the details.  I do
remember, however, that you don't need a battery in the line anywhere.
People who said to disable dialtone connection are correct.  This will be
done in the chat script on the calling machine.  Of course you won't need
to dial a number either.  You might want to look over a manual/table of
Hayes (modem) commands-- available on the net with a search-- to figure
out how to set up the modems on each side.

Yes, you could use a serial connection, but you're max transfer rate will
be about 9600 bps-- that's 9.6kbps-- as opposed to perhaps 56kbps if you
use modems of that speed.
