uhh, not quite,  I did
just  'su'  (not 'su -') from an ordinary user account, before running

I am not sure what you are implying, but Iwill try again
doing the  'su -'

I think I want to be root (insome form), bc some of the files
in /etc  have  -r--------  or -r--r-----,...
which then wont be picked up running 'cp -a' as an ordinary user


just tried again doing  'su -'    same symptoms

copied files on the nfs target dir showup with weird permissions,eg
-rw-------    1 65534    65534         516 Jun 29  1998 logrotate.conf
