 Indeed this is a good idea. Or you could borrow some memory during the 
installation. Another solution is to try Slackware. It could be that their 
installation does not need that much memory. I am not sure though, it's been a 
while since I installed on a 4 MB machine :).

 You should definitely do this. Chances are you put in the 486 hd in the 
installation machine as something like /dev/hdc, but use it as /dev/hda in the 
486. In that case you could install lilo with a temporary lilo.conf, but I 
always use the boot floppy to boot the new system (point it to the correct 
drive), then edit fstab and lilo.conf and finally run lilo.
 If you try Slackware, let me know it their installation still runs on your 4 
MB machine.
