 How do I get the icon back? Or is that the problem?

If using GNOME, right-click on desktop and select "Rescan Devices".

To recreate the icon manually, confirm the mount point:

  cat /etc/fstab

Then create a lnk to the mount point on your desktop:

  cd ~/.gnome-desktop
  ln -s /mnt/floppy Floppy

Then right click on your desktop and select "Rescan Desktop Directory". If
the icon does not appear, logout and log back in. You can customize the icon
using right-click -> Properties.
