I tried to set up SAMBA this past weekend, with some success. Basically, I
wanted to be able to share files between my laptop (NT 4.0) and my home
computer, which thanks to the Win2K upgrade is a RH 6.1 box. I (loosely)
followed the HOWTO on home-networking, but without the "outside" setup.
For now, I won't post all the details, but I'm able to ping from NT to Linux
and from Linux to NT. The Samba server, smbd, nmbd, smbclient, and dhcpd all
seem to be working fine. I use the Linux box as my gateway and DHCP server,
my NT laptop gets the right IP addr (I use 192.168.1.2, for private
network).
The only thing I can't do is map a drive in NT to a share on the Linux box.
I've gone through the 'DIAGNOSIS.txt' file (some of you may know what I'm
referring to). I get the message "You are not authorized to do that from
this station" or something like that. My first assumption is that it's a
host permission problem of some sort, but I don't know if it's hosts.deny,
hosts.allow, /etc/hosts, or smb.conf! Or maybe I need to encrypt passwords
and/or set up smbpasswd? I should mention that my NT login is 'jblackmore'
but I try to map the drive as 'john' and enter the appropriate password for
the linux box. Anyone know how I can grant permission to do this?
