I recently upgraded from Red Hat 5.2 + updates and Gnome 1.0 to 6.2 +
Helixcode on my Alpha. I started experiencing sudden freezes at
various times/places. The problem got to the point that my computer
froze during a shutdown command. What I did to recover was remove
~/.gome and ~/.enlightment. Problem solved.
Now I don't know if your problem is related but I give you this as a
possibility.
