What kind of drive is it? Is it a Sony Superstation or Aiwa Bolt?
If so, they are known not to work with Linux, and never will. Apparently
they are only ATAPI in a most superficial way, the underlying machine
is incompatible, the ATAPI driver maintaner apparently spent a LOT of
work to support them and was unsuccessful. Also, the manufacturer has
dropped those drives (they are said to be the SAME drive) so there's
now no push to make them work.
If not one of those, you may find it helpful to join the linux-tape
mailing list where there seem to be some knowledgeable people.
