For what it's worth, I have installed many 40GB IDE drives into linux
systems.  Using an ASUS P2B with a rev 1010 BIOS would cause the system to
hang on the POST screen.  Upgrading the BIOS to v1012 fixed everything and
the drive worked perfectly.  I generally set all my IDE drives to
auto-detect in the BIOS.  Your best bet is to upgrade that BIOS.
