I don't believe that RH 6.1's kernel had CONFIG_2GB set as y in their
kernel config. (I might be wrong I don't have the src.rpm lying
around.) In any case if CONFIG_2GB wasn't set as y a recompile would
fix the problem. This assumes that the kernel correctly detects the
memory. We had to back port some memory hole detection from 2.3 to get
some newer motherboards to work correctly.
